• Quantification of DNA, RNA, and protein concentrations in molecular biology.
• Enzyme kinetics and biochemical assays in pharmaceutical research and development.
• Cell viability and proliferation studies in cell biology.
• ELISA (Enzyme-Linked Immunosorbent Assay) for immunology and diagnostics.
• Microbial growth studies in microbiology.

Typical plate formats

Commonly accommodates 96-well and 384-well microplates.

Wavelength range

Units of this type typically operate from 190 nm to 850 nm.

Photometric range

For this class of equipment, a range of 0 to 4.0 OD is typical.

Temperature control

Often includes temperature control from ambient + 4°C up to 45°C.

Light source

A xenon flash lamp is commonly used for stable and broad-spectrum illumination.

Power supply

Typically requires a standard laboratory power supply, often 100-240V AC, 50/60 Hz.

• What is an absorbance microplate reader used for?

An absorbance microplate reader measures the amount of light absorbed by samples in microplate wells. This data is used to quantify substances, monitor reactions, and assess biological activity in various assays.

• What is the significance of the wavelength range?

• Does this unit require specific software?

• What maintenance is typically required for this type of equipment?

• Can this reader perform kinetic assays?

Microplate readers remain essential laboratory instruments valued for their reliability and consistency in high-throughput screening applications. Buyers typically prioritise optical performance, wavelength range compatibility, and software functionality when evaluating used models. Key considerations include detector condition, calibration currency, and spare parts availability. The equipment generally performs well in pharmaceutical development, diagnostics, and research settings. Reputation centres on durability and cost-effectiveness, particularly when sourced from well-maintained laboratory environments with complete documentation.
