What is the primary difference between a stirred and unstirred water bath?

An unstirred water bath relies on convection for heat distribution, suitable for general applications. A stirred bath includes a mechanism to actively circulate water, providing superior temperature uniformity, particularly for sensitive or larger volume samples.

Can this water bath be used for applications requiring temperatures below ambient?

No, standard heated water baths are designed for temperatures above ambient. For sub-ambient applications, a refrigerated or chiller bath would be required.

What maintenance is typically required for an unstirred water bath?

Routine maintenance typically involves regularly cleaning the tank to prevent algae and scale build-up, and periodically checking the water level. Using distilled or deionised water is recommended to prolong element life.

Is a lid necessary for operation?

While not always strictly necessary, using a lid significantly improves temperature stability, reduces evaporation, and helps to achieve and maintain higher temperatures more efficiently. It is generally recommended for optimal performance.

What safety features are commonly found on these units?

Typical safety features include over-temperature protection to prevent overheating, and often a low-water cut-off to protect the heating element from damage if the water level drops too low.
