DELL PowerConnect 2816 Smart Switch

• Integrating laboratory instruments into a network infrastructure.
• Connecting various control units and PLC modules within an industrial setting.
• Providing network connectivity for small to medium-sized office or production environments.
• Facilitating data exchange between networked machinery and monitoring systems.

Typical Port Configuration

This model typically features 16 Gigabit Ethernet ports.

Management Type

Units of this type commonly offer 'smart management' features, balancing ease of use with advanced configuration options.

Power Supply

Typically operates on standard AC mains power, commonly 100-240V, via an external or internal power supply unit.

Mounting Options

Often designed for desktop use or rack-mounting with appropriate kits, for this class of equipment.

Throughput

For this class of equipment, a non-blocking switching fabric is common, supporting full wire-speed forwarding across all ports.

Cooling

Units of this size are often fanless for silent operation, or feature low-noise fans.

• What is a 'Smart Switch'?

A smart switch, also known as a web-managed or intelligent switch, offers a balance between unmanaged and fully managed switches. It provides basic management features via a web interface, allowing for configuration of VLANs, QoS, and port mirroring, without the complexity of a full Layer 3 switch.

• Can this switch be integrated with existing network infrastructure?

• What kind of cables are required for this switch?

• Does this unit support Power over Ethernet (PoE)?

Control units and PLC modules are valued for their reliability and precision in laboratory and pharmaceutical environments. Buyers typically prioritise units with clear documentation and verified operational history, as proper maintenance directly affects performance. Common strengths include robust construction, compatibility with existing systems, and long operational lifespans. When purchasing used equipment, inspecting calibration records and testing functionality before installation remains standard practice. These systems generally command steady demand due to their essential role in process automation and facility management.
