What is the primary benefit of a stirred water bath over an unstirred one?

A stirred water bath provides superior temperature uniformity and stability throughout the bath, which is crucial for applications requiring highly precise temperature control.

What maintenance is typically required for a used water bath?

Regular cleaning of the bath chamber, checking the water level, and periodic draining and refilling with distilled or deionised water are common maintenance tasks. Inspecting seals and heating elements is also advisable.

Can this unit be used for applications below ambient temperature?

A standard stirred water bath like the GD120 is designed for heating applications. For temperatures below ambient, a refrigerated or chiller unit would typically be required, sometimes in conjunction with a water bath.

What type of water should be used in the bath?

Distilled or deionised water is recommended to prevent scale build-up and corrosion, which can extend the lifespan of the heating elements and the bath itself. Tap water is generally not advised.

Are there any specific safety considerations for operating this equipment?

Always ensure the water level is correct to prevent the heating element from running dry. Use appropriate PPE, avoid direct contact with hot surfaces, and ensure the unit is placed on a stable, heat-resistant surface away from flammable materials.

Typical capacity: For this class of equipment, capacities commonly range from 12 to 20 litres.
Power supply: Units of this type typically operate on a standard UK single-phase 230V, 50Hz supply.
Temperature range: Commonly, these units offer a temperature range from ambient +5°C up to 99°C.
Temperature stability: A stability of ±0.1°C or better is typically expected for stirred water baths in this category.
Heating power: Heating power for a unit of this size is typically in the range of 1.0 to 1.5 kW.
Circulation: Internal stirring or circulation is standard for maintaining temperature uniformity.

A stirred water bath provides superior temperature uniformity and stability throughout the bath, which is crucial for applications requiring highly precise temperature control.

Water baths and heating baths are generally valued in laboratory and biotech settings for their reliability and precision temperature control. When purchasing used units, buyers typically prioritize checking heating uniformity, control system functionality, and tank condition to avoid corrosion issues. These devices are known for their durability and long operational lifespan when properly maintained. Industry sentiment favors established brands known for consistent performance and availability of spare parts.
