The specimen advance mechanism is the heart of the instrument, so it must move smoothly and increment accurately at fine settings. Test sectioning at your typical thickness reveals chatter, skipping or thickness variation immediately. Ask for a demonstration cutting a paraffin block, because these faults do not show in a static inspection.

Only if your work includes frozen sections, such as intraoperative diagnosis or certain enzyme and lipid studies that paraffin processing would destroy. Routine diagnostic histology runs on rotary instruments alone. Match the instrument to the tissue states you actually section rather than acquiring capability you will rarely use.

Beyond the sectioning mechanism, verify the refrigeration reaches and holds chamber and specimen temperatures, since a failing cooling system is a serious fault. Ask for temperature logs or a demonstration reaching operating temperature. Check defrost function and door seals too, as these affect both performance and running cost.

Disposable blade systems are fairly standardised, but blade holders and knife clamps are frequently model specific, so confirm what comes with the instrument. An instrument missing its correct holder needs that part sourced before it can cut. When enquiring, ask exactly which holders and accessories are included in the sale.
