Techne Dri-block DB3 Heat Block

• Sample incubation in molecular biology, such as DNA denaturation or enzyme reactions.
• Chemical reactions requiring precise temperature control in small volumes.
• Boiling point determinations and melting point studies in analytical chemistry.
• Sample preparation for analytical techniques like spectroscopy or chromatography.
• Microbiological assays requiring controlled temperature environments for cultures.

Typical temperature range

Ambient to approximately 100-150°C, depending on the specific model and block.

Block capacity

This class of equipment typically accommodates 1 to 3 interchangeable blocks, each designed for various tube or vial sizes.

Temperature stability

Commonly ±0.1°C to ±0.5°C for precise temperature control.

Power supply

Typically single-phase 230V, 50Hz for units sold in the UK, with power consumption varying by model.

Heating rate

Units of this type commonly heat up to 100°C in under 15-20 minutes.

Footprint

For a DB3 model, the benchtop footprint is typically compact, suitable for laboratory environments.

• What types of blocks are compatible with a Techne Dri-block DB3?

Techne Dri-block DB3 units are designed to accept specific aluminium insert blocks from Techne, available for various tube sizes (e.g., 0.2ml, 0.5ml, 1.5ml, 2.0ml microcentrifuge tubes, PCR plates, test tubes).

• Is calibration required for a used heat block?

• What maintenance does a Dri-block heater typically require?

• Can this unit be used for cooling applications?

• What safety features are commonly found on these units?

Dry block heaters are valued in laboratory and biotech settings for reliable, uniform sample heating. Buyers typically appreciate their compact design, precise temperature control, and ease of use. When purchasing used units, checking calibration accuracy, element functionality, and power cord condition remains important. Industry sentiment favours models with consistent performance records and minimal maintenance history. Common strengths include rapid heat-up times, good temperature stability, and compatibility with standard microtubes and vials. Corrosion resistance in the heating block surface is often considered desirable for longevity.
