Water Baths & Heating Baths

Confirm the heater reaches and holds its set temperature evenly across the bath. Check the tank for corrosion, scale or limescale damage and, on a circulating model, that the pump runs smoothly. A bath that heats unevenly or leaks around the tank should be avoided until repaired.

A standard bath heats vessels placed in it, while a circulating bath pumps fluid to an external instrument or jacket. If you only incubate or warm samples, a standard bath is enough. Choose a circulating model when you need to feed a controlled temperature supply elsewhere.

Pick a capacity that holds your largest batch of vessels with the fluid covering them properly. An undersized bath forces extra runs, while an oversized one takes longer to reach temperature. Consider the depth too, since tall vessels need adequate immersion for even heating.

Water baths top out below its boiling range, so temperatures above that need an oil filled bath. Oil baths reach higher set points but need careful handling and cleaning. Choose an oil bath only when your protocol genuinely requires temperatures beyond water's range.
