They draw a known volume of air through a sampling head so that airborne microorganisms are impacted onto an agar contact plate (or Petri dish) for subsequent incubation and colony counting.

These instruments are commonly used in cleanrooms, pharmaceutical manufacturing, hospitals, and other controlled environments to assess airborne microbial contamination.
