What is a ball roaster?

A ball roaster is a type of industrial roaster that uses a spherical or drum-like chamber to tumble and heat the product, ensuring uniform roasting through constant movement and even heat exposure.

What maintenance is typically required for a used roaster?

Routine maintenance for used roasters commonly includes burner inspection and cleaning, checking electrical components, lubricating moving parts, and ensuring all safety interlocks are functional. Drum bearings and seals may also require periodic inspection.

Can this type of roaster be converted to run on a different fuel?

Fuel conversion is often possible but requires professional assessment and modification by a qualified gas engineer to ensure safety and compliance with local regulations. This typically involves changing burner components and control systems.

What are the typical installation requirements?

Installation typically requires a dedicated industrial power supply, appropriate gas line connections, and robust ventilation to manage exhaust gases. Sufficient floor space and ceiling height are also necessary for operation and maintenance access.

Are spare parts readily available for vintage roasters?

Availability of spare parts for vintage equipment can vary. While some generic components might be sourced, specific manufacturer-branded parts may require custom fabrication or sourcing from specialist suppliers.

Specialty roasting of grains or malt for brewing and distilling.

Typical capacity: Roasters in this class commonly handle batch sizes around 45-60 kg.
Power supply: Units of this type typically require a 3-phase electrical supply, commonly 400V.
Fuel type: Industrial roasters are often set up for LPG, natural gas, or sometimes oil burners, with power ratings typically around 60kW.
Footprint: For this class of equipment, a footprint of approximately 1.6m x 2.1m (L x W) is common, with a height around 2.8m.
Roasting mechanism: Ball roasters utilise a rotating drum or sphere to ensure even heat distribution and product agitation.
Construction materials: Typically constructed from robust industrial-grade metals, such as cast iron or stainless steel, for durability and heat retention.

A ball roaster is a type of industrial roaster that uses a spherical or drum-like chamber to tumble and heat the product, ensuring uniform roasting through constant movement and even heat exposure.

Used roasters are valued for their durability and cost effectiveness in food processing operations. Buyers typically prioritise even heat distribution, temperature control consistency, and robust construction when selecting secondhand units. Industry sentiment favours roasters from established manufacturers known for reliable performance. Key considerations include maintenance history, heating element condition, and capacity matching operational requirements. Well-maintained roasters often deliver dependable service across coffee roasting, nut processing, and other food applications, making them sound investments for processors seeking to minimise capital expenditure.
